For the star-wars graphics, Larry Cuba (et al?) made a 10 minute tutorial/demo on how the clip was made, and it’s been online for about a decade

My parents had a Handbook of Chemistry and Physics from the 20s. It includes instructions for mixing photo developing chemicals, silvering mirrors, and making crosshairs from spider silk, along with the usual tables.
