hi :) i just got my axidraw v3 a3 and i am a little disappointed with the results. the longer the y axis arm extends the more imprecise the drawing. really terrible, circles are no longer circles, everything is jittery and off. please look at the photo attached. also i notices the y axis arm has about 2-3 millimeter play when fully extended. is this normal ? the ball bearings also do not touch the rail 100%. to be honest with a machine of this price i expect everything to be tight and no jiggling of parts. thank you :)

No, that sounds dreadfully out of the ordinary; The pictures are horrifying. AxiDraw should pleasingly precise, with no appreciable play in the carriages.The most likely case is that it got bumped hard during shipping, and bumped one or both carriages out of alignment. You should check for any more serious damage elsewhere (bent metal, broken parts) as well.
The good news is that it is relatively straightforward to tune it back up. If you write to us by e-mail (or use our contact form at https://shop.evilmadscientist.com/contact ), we can send you a PDF with instructions. If you read through them carefully, it should take you about five minutes to get back to AxiDraw-level precision.
June 2, 2019 at 4:49 pm #27544RomazzinoParticipantthanks for tue quick reply :) yes it must have been handled quite roughly as the end of the x axis (not the end with the board but the one where there is only the stepper motor is) is dented or bent which must have taken quite a bit of force since this is such a rigid part. luckily everything is fully functional so i dont really mind.
i also have now found the excenter screws and readjusted the alignment of the bearings. i am happy to say that my axidraw now works as intended and is very very precise without any unwanted moving parts! thanks again, really happy, very nice machine :) keep it up guys, greetings from austria :)

How bad is the damage on the far X end? Is it just the motor cover that is dented, or is the damage more extensive?

the damage is only on the housing, its not too bad but i guess it must have had quite an impact since it is not easy to deform such a strong part! here is a quick picture, i’ll try to make one in the daylight which is a bit clearer but its also visible in this picture:

June 2, 2019 at 6:27 pm #27548Windell OskayKeymasterWhoa! Holy cow that is a hell of a “bump”. That’s _really_ solid material there; it takes a lot to affect it.
There’s not much that we can do about that kind of dent other than replacing the whole strut, but if you’re reasonably happy with it (and the performance is there) then we’re happy too.
