I’m connecting a Mac Studio M1 into the Axidraw/EBB via usb. I run the beast for several hours straight – it’s a workhorse!

Sometimes, alas it halts due to an error. I suspect, but don’t know for sure, that some (all?) of these errors are due to USB problems.

Here’s the most common error, while drawing a layer:
    Failed after command: SM,51,-895,895
    Failed after command: SM,26,-427,427
    Failed after command: SM,26,-388,388
    Failed after command: SM,27,-349,349
    Failed after command: SM,26,-311,311
    Failed after command: SM,26,-272,272
    Failed after command: SM,27,-233,233
    Failed after command: SM,26,-194,194
    Failed after command: SM,26,-155,155
    Failed after command: SM,27,-117,117
    Failed after command: SM,26,-77,77
    Failed after command: SM,26,-39,39
    Failed after command: SM,10,0,0
at this point the gears are mashing and the pen position is somewhere on Mars, so I restart everything.

Second problem (may be related to the 1st)… Sometimes I see this message:
EBB Serial Timeout after command: SM,26,-385,-385

    And occasionally this shows up:
Error testing serial port /dev/cu.usbmodem51123201 connection
    Failed to connect to AxiDraw.

    And this guy sometimes appears:
    Error reading serial data
    USB connection to AxiDraw lost.
Use the resume feature to continue.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

First, you might consider updating to version 3.6; we’ve streamlined the error messages a bit.

All of these error messages (“Failed after command”, “Error reading serial data”, “Error testing serial port”, “Failed to connect to AxiDraw.”) appear to indicate an actual loss of USB connectivity (encountered by the software in different circumstances). Together, they paint a picture of an unreliable USB connection.

Typically, this kind of thing happens when there’s a poor quality USB cable, for example way too long or unshielded. If you have a different USB cable available to try, go ahead and try that as a first step.

In addition to the cable, it’s possible to imagine this kind of thing happening due to USB adapter/hub, or software that’s keeping the computer extra busy, and so forth. You might try restarting the computer if a different cable doesn’t work.

It’s also possible that there’s something wrong with the USB port on the AxiDraw; a USB jack can potentially become flaky, though that’s uncommon except in cases of mechanical trauma.
