Mad Science 101: Inducing giantism in living organisms

Ask any group of mad scientists how they plan to take over the world, and one of the answers that you just might hear is “With giant monsters!” And rightly so. Mucking with the workings of life itselfis one of the key skills in the mad scientist’s arsenal.

Of course, we need to start small. The easiest way to begin is by experimenting on plants. Not only is it much less expensive, but your laboratory will remain more pleasant to work at, since PETP protestors tend to be fewer in number than those from PETA.

Plant growth, in all of its different aspects, is regulated by a complex system of hormones (signal chemicals) that are responsible for phenomena as complex as geotropism and phototropism, rooting and branching, dwarfism, and seed dormancy. It turns out that many of these chemicals are actually used in horticulture and are relatively easy to obtain.

One of the most interesting chemicals to play with is Gibberellic acid, a well-known and easily available plant hormone that can be used to stimulate growth. It is available in liquid form from United Nuclear, and can induce frankly absurdgrowth in many types of plants.

In order to see results quickly, it’s nice to start with a plant that grows quickly. We chose to experiment with mung been sprouts, which ordinarily reach maturity (from a particular salad-eater’s perspective) in about five days.

Bike Lunch Bag in Print

Our bicycle frame lunch bag project is showing up in print in a couple of places. The August/September issue of Bust magazine is running the project along a couple of other bicycle-themed articles. It’s nice to see bicycle fashion spreads that don’t include spandex! I like the Schwinn they used for the article photo, too.

The bag is also included in a calendar for next year, Sewing: 2010 Day-to-Day Calendar, which just arrived in the mail today. There are two projects each week, and each project is printed on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of paper folded in half. The loose leaf sheets are stored in a magnetic closure box which converts to an easel, which also locks in place with a magnet. Magnetic boxes are awesome! The box would be great to reuse as a recipe box/stand, especially since you don’t have to use funny sized cards for it. The calendar format is a little odd, showing three or four days at a time, but that’s probably fine for a decorative calendar. The bike bag appropriately shows up on Earth day. I appreciated that the calendar included a project index, and that every project author was listed with their website so you can look up their other projects, too.

DIY Skirt Guards in the wild

Brittany recently let us know that she had made skirt guards for her bike using my instructable. She used floral wire instead of cable ties since that’s what she had on hand. The guard following the shape of the rack is a nice touch, too.

The retro-dork-chic-DIY D12 handbag is back and better than ever– We’ve added a zipper, a handle cord, panel stiffeners and beautiful numbers.

Comparing this side by side to the original, it looks as though the original is getting floppier. That’s partly age, and partly just how much nicer the new model is. The new version is easier to assemble and holds its shape much better, thanks to internal pentagonal stiffeners that are fused to each face. The neat and tidy zipper closure is much neater and more reliable than the original magnetic enclosure.

And… those athletic style numbers (which are the best that our local craft stores carry) just had to go! We used a neat font called BPreplay to get simple rounded numbers that look like they could have been carved into a die. But we carved them with a laser: They’re made from cotton-poly blend which fuses as it is laser cut so that it the edges of the numbers won’t fray. Finally, the new handle cord is an obvious improvement over the simple fabric strip on the first verison.

And, by popular demand, we’ve designed a d20 as well:

The d20 has the same basic design as the new d12– complete with triangular internal stiffener panels to give it the right shape.

We’re making a pattern and kit for this project available in two sizes: darling and practical. The tiny one is just over three inches tall, and holds little things for you. The larger size is about five inches tall and will fit your phone, wallet and keys along with your dice.

Precision in packaging

Szechuan peppercorns


Sichuan peppercorns, oh yeah! Raven of Made with Molecules after eating them wrote, “There’s a war in my mouth.” They create a riot of numbing and tingling sensations, particularly if you can get relatively fresh ones (i.e. not stale from sitting around in a Whole Foods bulk bin). Raven links to an abstract about the particular anesthetic-sensitive potassium channels inhibited by hydroxy-alpha-sanshool, one of the components of sichuan peppercorns that make them so exciting.


Science aside, we recently found some in a local asian grocery store, and were particularly struck by the packaging. American packaging often has annoying disclaimers about how contents are packed by weight and may have settled. These peppercorns were not only weighed, but the precision of the scale is indicated! If only all packaging was so straightforward. I was going to complain that the package doesn’t say what kind of peppercorns were inside (sichuan peppercorns are not related to other peppercorns) but then realized that the Chinese characters are specific to these “flower peppers” even if the English words are more general. In any case, the reddish husks are recognizable through the bag.

RoboGames Awards

We’ve been helping out RoboGames with getting the award designs ready for next weekend. We just got the final prototypes done and handed over for production and we’re loving how they turned out! The awesome official artwork by Doctor Popular (below) features prominently on the medals, lit by throwie-style LEDs hidden between layers of acrylic. You want one of these around your neck, don’t you?
