I am new to eggbot and have produced many designs and texts on eggs and ping pong balls. Now many are asking me to reproduce portrait pictures on eggs. I have taken photos and converted them to both grey scale and b&w portraits on painting pro and later copied them to inkscape and made svg files. However the portraits are not coming out as the same.  Large black areas often come out as black outlined areas rather than compeltely black. Is there a  special way or a course to take to know how to convert jpg files to really usable svg files that can be used on the eggbot?

The Creating Filled Regions page of the documentation site should be helpful to you.

This may not be what you’re looking for, but we normally recommend StippleGen– a utility that we built for this very purpose — which can convert jpg files to black and white stipple or TSP drawings that can be drawn very well by an Eggbot:  http://wiki.evilmadscientist.com/StippleGen

Two good examples from other folks as well:
